An electric train carries you two kilometres into Postojna before the walking even starts. Škocjan’s chamber is big enough to swallow a cathedral. And above the cave at Predjama sits the castle whose owner used the tunnel behind it as a back door.
The Soča runs a green that photographs never believe.

Slovenia’s Baby Dragon
The olm lives only in the water of the Dinaric karst. It is blind, the colour of skin, and can go years between meals. When floods washed them out of the caves, locals decided they were dragon young. Postojna keeps a lit vivarium at the end of the cave-train route, and for most visitors it is the only place they will ever see one.

The Pletna and the Wishing Bell
The flat-bottomed pletna has been crossing to Bled island since 1590, rowed standing with two oars by boatmen from a fixed set of families who inherit the right to do it. On the island: ninety-nine steps, a church, and a bell you pull for a wish. The boats keep no timetable — they leave when they are full.

Slovenian rain is the best reason to go underground.
The Julian Alps make their own weather and the coast gets the bora. Neither reaches the Karst caves, which sit at ten degrees and total darkness every day of the year, or a Vipava cellar, or a castle with a roof on it. Rain cancels none of these.
